A downloadable game

SORThodonist

An Amiga tool made for the Amiga Tool Jam to help you sort things according to your personal preferences.

System Requirements

Workbench 3.1 or Workbench 2.1

It should run on any 68k processor but it doesn't run on OS1.3 and I haven't tested it on anything above OS3.1.

How to Install

There are no dependencies and there is no install process.  Just decompress the folder and it will run from there.

How to Start

This program needs to load a list for you to sort according to your preferences.  It should be a text file with one item per line.

To launch the program:

  1. Click on the file you want to sort
  2. Hold Shift
  3. Double click on the SORThodonist icon

Thats it.  It should pop right up.

Tip: This is an excellent time to use the "Leave Out" workbench feature in the Icon Menu.  That will let you access the SORThodontist icon while you choose a file to sort

Optionally you can give the file as an argument in the Amiga Shell like this:

sorthodontist ListToSort.txt

You will have to cd to that drawer for that to work.

You can click on the SORThodontist icon but then it won't know what file you want to sort and will politely tell you how to give it the information it needs.

How to Use

You will be presented with two options in the window of the app and your job is to pick the one you prefer.   You can choose by clicking on the buttons or by pressing the keys: A to choose the option on the left and D to choose the option on the right.

When the sort process is complete it will output the list to the background window and stop giving you new options and at this point you should click save to save your sorted results to a file (automatically uniquely timestamped).  This way you can sort the lists many times and each time it will save your sorted list to a new file so you can compare what you preferred as time passes.

What can you Sort?

There are many interesting files I have compiled for you to sort including the best rock albums from many years in history, top games, top Operating Systems, and more, but really its meant for you to make your own lists and sort whatever you want.  I made this to allow myself to clarify my subjective preferences to help me prioritize things in my world.

It is easy to make a new list to sort:

  1. Make a new text file
  2. Give it an icon (you could copy one of the previous lists and rename it and then it will already have these steps complete)
  3. Write each thing you want to sort on a separate line.

Thats it.  Now to sort your new file use it just like the included files following the instructions in the "How To Start" section above.

Hint: if it doesn't have an icon it won't work as reliably.

Amiga Tool Jam

https://itch.io/jam/amigatooljam

This tool was made during the timeframe of the Amiga Tool Jam.  I am entering it in the "Tool" category which is defined as "Larger and more advanced piece of software with GUI" .  System Requirements are listed above as WB2.1/WB3.1

It is complete as it is however I hope before the jam concludes to include more default files for you to sort if you want.  Also I hope to add a custom icon and a screenshot for this itch page.  Also possibly provide it in an lha archive instead of zip.

Notes

Ideally the lines in the input file shouldn't be too terribly long but if they are that's ok this program will cut them off relatively gracefully

The keys you can use to select left or right also correspond to left and right in the standard WASD control scheme

I tested it in OS3.1 in my development environment but also tested it in OS2.1 far outside of my development environment by simply booting from the OS2.1 floppy on an emulated A600 with the OS2 rom.  It worked well.

It was written in E and not a modern version but an original version from a long time ago.   I think it is all the versions from Mr. Van Oortmersson's website I learned a ton but I think there might even be easier ways to build a gui with E than what I did.
